Link on Korman Productions TV podcast Deep Dive: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone”; with Dave and Stacie (2024). As someone who read “Earth Abides” 20-25 years ago and fondly remembers the book, I was pleasantly surprised when it was made into a play. It’s always a bit of a worry when that happens, because you hope they stay true to the book and your visual expectations, I understand that a movie or TV show will struggle to live up to what you imagined when you read it.
There’s room for a good pandemic story in the aftermath of Covid
The book was written and set in the 1940s, and the show is modern, so the technology and overall “feel” are different; the medium is different from the book. The pace is naturally fast and especially rushed to match the character development and main plot in the first episode of the miniseries. Episode 1 successfully creates a compelling story that attempts to honor Stewart’s homework.
I’m looking forward to the rest
It invites fans of the book and new viewers to reflect on humanity’s place in a changed world. The acting is good so far, the production and effects look decent, maybe a little on the meager side (you’d expect a bunch of machines, etc.). "One Hundred Years of Solitude" ; is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
